“9/11: Never Forget” Exhibition Set to Open at the
General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum
(HOBART, Okla.) – The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum is proud to announce the opening of its newest permanent exhibit, “9/11: Never Forget,” set for Sept. 11, the 15th anniversary of the 2001 World Trade Center attack. A commemoration ceremony will mark the grand opening with special guest speakers.
The grand opening commemoration will begin in Hobart on the town square at noon with a complimentary lunch provided for the first 1000 people. The program will commence at 1 p.m. in the Stanley Building, located at 301 S. Washington. Attendees will hear from General Franks, Governor Mary Fallin as well as other national, state and local leaders as they reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Following the program, the exhibit will open for public tours at 3 p.m. in the museum located at 507 South Main Street.
“The implications of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States of America and the World Trade Center are still reverberating throughout our nation and the world,” said General Tommy Franks. “The ‘9/11: Never Forget’ exhibit brings an educational opportunity to all Americans, offering a view of the world before and after the attacks, and furthering the Museum’s mission of leadership, patriotism and service.”
‘Never Forget’ will showcase a 14-foot-long, 3,000-lb. steel I-beam from the World Trade Center, one of the few remaining pieces to be released from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The interior I-beam was part of the flooring system of the World Trade Center, and was damaged by the crushing force of the collapse. Areas are also dedicated to the Pentagon and Flight 93 and our nation’s response featuring President Bush’s address, vowing that America, its friends and allies would “stand together to win the war against terrorism.”
In addition to the I-beam, visitors to the new exhibition will experience a variety of interactive and visual features as well as artifacts from the World Trade Center attack on Sept. 11, 2001. The exhibit is designed to place visitors into the day in New York City and give them an opportunity to pay homage to the nearly 3,000 men, women and children from 93 nations who perished that day.
The new exhibit also includes suits and other articles of clothing worn and donated by key leaders following 9-11. Included are items from President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Senior Presidential Advisor Karl Rove, and White House Chief of Staff Andy Card.
